Valentyn Silvestrov

Valentyn Silvestrov was born in Kyiv, Ukraine. His musical studies began at the age of 15. In 1955 he entered the Kyiv Institute of Construction Engineering. From 1958 he studied composition with Borys Lyatoshynsky and counterpoint with Levko Revutsky at the Kyiv Conservatory (now the National Music Academy of Ukraine). In 1961 his debut as a composer occurred during a plenum of younger Ukrainian composers, and his Piano Quintet created a significant impression. Symphonic and instrumental music was the central focus of the composer. From the 1990s to the 2010s, Silvestrov devoted himself to choral music. His music is often performed on the international and national stage.Silvestrov has established himself as a leading composer of Ukraine.
